The main purpose of Linda’s blog is to send out a clarion call for help in securing safe water, clothing and place to live. Are you able to help?

Canary Report contributor Linda Sepp launched her own blog today! I am doing the admin on the site but the writing is all Linda’s.

As many of you know, Linda suffers severe Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and is housebound. She faces eviction on April 4. She’s using the blog to explain her urgent housing needs in the hopes of finding people who can help her in securing safe water, clothing and place to live. Other than a limited amount of support given by Canada’s social services, Linda’s basically been abandoned by her country’s safety net, even though Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and Environmental Sensitivities are fully recognized by the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

The urgency of Linda’s situation cannot be over emphasized given the looming eviction. Please visit her blog, read through the posts and pages, and if you are able to help her in any way, please do so! I’m especially interested in finding people in Toronto who can help Linda with everything from daily chores like shopping and shoveling snow, to the larger challenges such as installing a water filter and finding her a safe home.

Linda’s challenges are great but I’m convinced there are people out there who can help her. We just need to find them and enlist their help. Please do all you can to brainstorm about this, or more importantly, implement action!

From Linda’s “About” page:

I am disabled and housebound from severe Multiple Chemical Sensitivities / Environmental Sensitivities (MCS/ES) and chemically induced Fibromyalgia (FM) as well as some ElectroHyperSensitivity (EHS). My symptoms and abilities are directly, and often severely impacted by exposure to petro-chemicals, moulds, wireless technologies and high electrical fields, yet most resolve when I am able to avoid exposures. There may be some residual and permanent brain damage, but we won’t know until I have safe housing and the therapeutic supports required to repair and heal the damage.

My critical and urgent needs list includes: 1) a whole house water filtration system and installation, 2) a washing machine, 3) clothing, 4) a housing search and preparation, and 5) an advocate to help me navigate the processes to secure it all. Are you able to help me in any way?

Bloggers, please add Linda’s blog to your blogroll and share her story with your readers. Please do all you can to find people who can help her secure safe water, clothing and a place to live. You can also donate funds by check or PayPal, or purchase some needed clothing for Linda.

Together, we can make this happen!

The Pesticide Action Network launches interactive website.

panThe Pesticide Action Network reports:

Today we launched PAN’s new What’sOnMyFood? website.

The searchable site reveals what pesticides are found on which foods, in what amount, and – for the first time – links pesticide residues to the health effects associated with exposure to each of the chemicals.

Spread the Word » What’sOnMyFood? is an outreach tool meant to build momentum toward real pesticide reform — we need your help to make it work!

In addition to highlighting the health risks of pesticide residues, the What’sOnMyFood? database points to the hazards of pesticide use before food even reaches the kitchen table. By taking readers deeper into the public problem of pesticides, the site shows how widespread use of agricultural chemicals threatens the health of workers and rural communities, as well as harming wildlife and contaminating ecosystems.

Examples of pesticides facts found with What’sOnMyFood?

Share this tool with 3 friends today! » Thank you for helping us launch this important new website.

Water systems thoughout the US are adding toxic chemicals to your water source. You should have a good water filter at the faucet where you pull your drinking water, one that is specifically addressing the contaminants in your water.

water-dropletYesterday, Amy reported on the importance of pure water. Today, I thought I would pick up on the water theme, and talk a little about the problems with obtaining pure water, and give you some solutions for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

The Maneater reports the city of Columbia, Missouri, will undergo a new disinfection process to reduce carcinogenic by-products. The goal is to lower trihalomethane levels in the city’s water; THMs are by-products of the city’s disinfection process, formed after chlorine breaks down organic material. Some THMs are considered carcinogenic.

To reduce the THM levels, says Maneater, the city will add ammonia to the already chlorinated water, a method used by many water systems in the United States. But dig this: “Adding ammonia to chlorinated water will form the chemical chloramine, which will help slow the formation of THMs.”

The report goes on to explain:

If the water we drink is contaminated with chemicals, how can we detox from the other chemicals we are exposed to?

Post by Amy Ludwigson

waterPure water perhaps more than anything else is essential to our health and to our well-being.  Our bodies are composed of more than 72% water.  Water and air is what gives us life.  We always say that you are what you eat, but how about what you drink?  Our bodies need water to detox the chemicals that we are exposed to, yet if our water contains said chemicals than how are our bodies going to catch up with detoxing the chemicals that we are exposed to?

Over 2100 chemicals have been found in our water ways, and essentially all treated water in the US contains chlorine.  Ignore all the other chemicals for now and let’s look at chlorine.  Chlorine alone, when it interacts with the natural compounds in water, produce  trihalomethanes (THMs),  THMs are cancer causing compounds. THMs are also linked to kidney, liver, and nervous system damage as well as birth defects. Read more at my previous post Water Toxins: Chlorine.

Not only do you need to drink pure water, but you also need to drink quite a lot of it.  It has been medically proven that if the body fluid level drops 5%, that it will cause a decrease in energy anywhere from 25-30% in most people.  It is also thought that nearly two thirds of the population is dehydrated.  Imagine how much better we would feel if we drank enough water.  Our bodies need at least eight glasses of water every day to carry out its daily functions.  Drinking more than this will allow our body to have the water needed to flush out the toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Think about it.  How much water do you consume a day? Is it pure water?

The film Food Matters uncovers the trillion dollar worldwide “Sickness Industry.”

A must see film.

“Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food.” — Hippocrates.

That’s the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial new documentary film ‘Food Matters’ from first-time Producer-Directors James Colqhuoun and Laurentine ten Bosch.

“With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what’s wrong with our malnourished bodies, it’s no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. ‘Food Matters’ sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide “Sickness Industry” and giving people some scientifically verifiable solutions for curing disease naturally.” – James Colqhuoun.

And in what promises to be the most contentious idea put forward, the filmmakers have interviewed several world leaders in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.

‘Food Matters’ is to be launched globally via the internet using full screen video technology.

The film’s official website can be found at http://www.foodmatters.tv

chimney

Stone Edge chimney and reservoir near Ashover, Derbyshire. It is recorded as being the oldest industrial chimney in Britain, built around 1770 as part of a lead-smelting cupola.

Researchers are certain they can develop a viable treatment for former industrial sites where chromate compounds are a problem.

UK– The harmful chromium compounds found in the groundwater at sites receiving waste from former textiles factories, smelters, and tanneries have been linked to cancer, and excessive exposure can lead to problems with the kidneys, liver, lungs and skin.

The research team, led by Dr Doug Stewart from the School of Civil Engineering and Dr Ian Burke from the School of Earth and Environment, has discovered that adding dilute acetic acid (vinegar) to the affected site stimulates the growth of naturally-occurring bacteria by providing an attractive food source. In turn, these bacteria then cleanse the affected area by altering the chemical make-up of the chromium compounds to make them harmless.

The research, part funded by The Royal Society, is published online in the Journal of Ecological Engineering doi:10.1016/j.ecoleng.2008.12.028.

Bottled water is a big, nasty corporate business and may contain disinfection byproducts, fertilizer residue, and pain medication.

Tap Water

Bottled water is bad news for many different reasons. Many brands are contaminated with things you really do not want to be putting in your body, the discarded plastic bottles are polluting the environment, and too many companies who are bottling the water are greedy corporations without a thought to their impact on the environment or the rural communities surrounding their plants.

Take a look at some of the problems with bottled water.

A new EWG study shows that bottled water is polluted with a range of contaminants, including many of the same chemical pollutants typical in municipal tap water supplies. Laboratory tests – conducted for EWG at one of the country’s leading water quality laboratories – found that ten popular brands of bottled water, purchased from grocery stores and other retailers in nine states and the District of Columbia, contained 38 chemical pollutants altogether, with an average of 8 contaminants in each brand.

Two of ten brands tested, Walmart’s and Giant’s store brands, bore the chemical signature of standard municipal water treatment — a cocktail of chlorine disinfection byproducts at concentrations that exceeded legal limits and industry-sponsored voluntary safety standards. Four brands were also contaminated with bacteria. These results show that consumers should have no confidence in the purity of the bottled water they buy. If the water at the source is contaminated, so will be the water in the bottle. And bottled water production itself can contribute additional chemical pollutants.

And take a look at comments to Enviroblog’s post:

[Comment] Your study on Bottle Water is coming under fire for bad research methodologies. I hope you will be able to clear all this up or it could seriously damage your organizations credibility. Link to the news story.

[Answer] To see EWG response to the statements from the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), “IBWA Claims Tests Show No Contaminants, But Test Results Nowhere to Be Found,” go to link.

Note that the “expert” at Yale, Stephen Edberg, who refuted the EWG study for “bad research methodologies,” works as a consultant to the International Bottled Water Association and Nestle Waters North America. Nestle is accused by environmental and community groups for damaging water tables and ripping apart rural communities in the areas where they have their plants. Stop Nestle Waters says:

Why are we targeting Nestle Waters?

  • Because Nestle’s predatory tactics in rural communities divide small towns and pit residents against each other.
  • Because Nestle reaps huge profits from the water they extract from rural communities – which are left to deal with the damage to watersheds, increases in pollution and the loss of their quiet rural lifestyle
  • Because Nestle has a pattern of bludgeoning small communities and opponents with lawsuits and interfering in local elections to gain control of local water supplies.
  • Because the environmental consequences of bottled water on our atmosphere, watersheds and landfills are simply too big to ignore.
  • Because no international corporation should have the right to pilfer the public’s water for profit.

Best solution in regards to your drinking water? Drink filtered tap water and use a glass or stainless steel container when you are on the go.
