Come join the Yellow Hats and Feathers MCS Awareness Campaign!

By guest blogger Sherry Adams.

(Editor’s Note: This month, as we prepare for May 2010 MCS Awareness Month, The Canary Report is sponsoring the Yellow Hats and Feathers Campaign, where our members are creating clothing, hats, pins and myriad other symbols to wear in May, all with the hopes of sparking conversations with others about Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. This blog post is the first in a series, where members of The Canary Report community will be sharing activities, events and ideas about how you can raise MCS awareness. Please welcome our first guestblogger on MCS awareness, Canary Report member Sherry Adams.)

Across the globe, people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity are coming together to raise their voices to raise awareness for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The International MCS Awareness Campaign is a cooperative effort for and by people suffering with MCS.

If you or someone you know suffers from MCS, join the campaign and take the pledge to raise awareness about this serious environmental illness and what it means to our communities and the environment. You can do this by wearing a yellow hat, or a canary or feather pin to show your support. The yellow represents the canary in the coal mine, standing as a warning to all that this progressively emerging illness is a community issue that requires a community solution. In participation with MCS Awareness Month this May, we are hoping to see seas of yellow hats and pins all across the globe!

How to participate?

Wear a yellow hat

If you don’t have one already you can purchase your hat on-line, here are some ideas:

Wear a yellow feather pin

You can purchase The Canary Report pin online.

Or you can make your own.

  • Making your pin you’ll need three things: A pin, a canary yellow feather, and some non toxic glue.
  • You can purchase feathers and pin bases at your local arts and crafts shop or on-line at Zucker Feather, Line’s End, or Fred Aldous.

If you can’t tolerate dyed yellow or synthetic feathers, you can get natural white ones and colour them your self using Turmeric. See an article here on tips on how to dye with turmeric. The article is for dying eggs but can be adjusted for feathers.

Makes Sense Challenge

You also may be interested in joining the Yellow Hats Campaign with the our Makes Sense Challenge at Bead Heaven. It’s a way to get people thinking about their personal products and gives them a chance to have to moment of discovery for themselves about their own exposures to toxic chemicals.

Once your yellow hats and pins start the conversation, the Makes Sense Challenge is something to which you can point people to engage them in the learning process– it makes it personal for them.

What ideas do you have for MCS Awareness?
