Australia’s Allergy and Environmental Sensitivity Support and Research Association will hold a seminar for people with chemical sensitivities on May 15.

lynne-robertsThe Waverley Leader in Melbourne, Australia, reports on Lynne Roberts’s life with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and the upcoming seminar for people with chemical sensitivity.

WITH the slightest scent of perfume, laundry detergent, paint solvent or household cleaning product, Lynne Roberts can feel the symptoms coming on.

The 52-year-old was diagnosed with multiple chemical sensitivity nine years ago, a condition which has now confined her mostly to her Mulgrave home, away from the polluted and fragrance-filled air outside.

The smallest amount of contact with such items leaves her with headaches, stomach aches, nausea and swollen burning eyes.

“It’s come on fairly gradually over a period of time,” Ms Roberts said.

“I react really badly to solvents, sealants, new carpets, car exhausts, air fresheners and laundry products.”

She said that as a result, she had been left to wash her clothes with bicarbonate soda and rinse them with white vinegar.

As a member of Allergy and Environmental Sensitivity Support and Research Association (AESSRA), Ms Roberts has helped organise a seminar at Warranwood’s Michael Centre on May 15, highlighting the condition.

It is believed to be Melbourne’s first fragrance-free event.
