Relaxing in the garden
November 2, 2008 by Susie Collins
Occasionally, I remember to STOP, sit, and enjoy the garden. Usually, my concept of leisure in the garden is an “active leisure,” where puttering around is the relaxation. But this evening I took the time to sit in the rocker on the front porch and chill. It was cloudy and overcast, so the colors aren’t too vibrant, but still, you get the idea.
As you regular visitors to The Canary Report can see, last weekend we ripped out the groundcover that surrounded the pond. It did look beautiful, but it was always galloping out of control and took more maintenance than I was willing to give it. So for now, the cement tiles holding up the terrace are visible, but we will soon remedy that with more well behaved plantings.

what a beautiful place–
Thank you, Celia. It’s my sanctuary, my secret garden. (Not so secret I guess now that I’ve put it up on the Internet. LOL.) But still, it’s the place where I can retreat and remember that the world is a beautiful place. Ahhhhh.
I agree! Absolutely gorgeous! I can’t wait to have a garden like that of my own!
Hi Rachel! I need to visit your blog more often and share with my readers! Super info on allergy-friendly and eco-friendly foods, and presented in such a lovely way.
It took me 15 years to get my garden to where it feels like an oasis, a safe and nurturing place. The two components that really made it happen were the addition of the four hens and then the integration of the water gardens. I think it has to do with the energy that the creatures (chickens and fish) bring to the mix; tending to them and loving them connect me to the plants, soil, sun and air in a way that the plant gardens alone just didn’t do. I find the work it takes to tend everything to be a creative process– especially the ponds, which are like works of art that shift and change every day, and I feel enriched with that process (not unlike cooking!).
That looks like a wonderful place to get away to! A perfect hide-a-way spot to stop and rest.
Oh hi Kate! Yes, it is, if I remember to actually stop and rest. I always want to go fuss with the plants, clean the water, rearrange the rocks. It’s like a living art, I kid you not. Already those bare tiles are bugging me, I gotta get those re-planted so they disappear under some pretty plants!
