Evening

sunset

The light in the garden was beautiful this evening while I fed the fish and closed up the chicken coops; everything was bathed in a yellow glow. It’s been cool the past few nights, and the air especially fresh at sunset with some light showers at night.

The chickens have an evening routine that they stick to no matter what: eat their corn, forage for a few more bugs, preen and preen and preen, then scoot off to the coops for sleep. Here’s the alpha hen Lucy this evening, with Lydia in the back preening. They lead very busy and industrious lives and their eyes are often closed within a minute of settling in on the roosts.

chickensMy evening chores are a peaceful way to end each day. I had a good day today, but even when I don’t feel well, my trip out to care for the animals and maybe do some watering often snaps me out of any self pity. It’s partly because of the fresh air, but also because being out there makes me feel part of something bigger than myself and helps me get a better perspective on my inner dramas.
